Schools Out for Summer – Now What?

No matter where you are in the world during the school vacation, there are no doubt restrictions on where you are allowed to travel and what you are allowed to do because of the current COVID-19 pandemic. These limitations may have forced you to change vacation travel plans and left you and your family disappointed. Add to this that after spending so much time sheltering in place or in lockdown with your family, the idea of staying put at home doesn’t sound like much fun at all. But a school vacation is a terrible thing to waste so we have a few suggestions for you:

Day Trip

Many of us have not yet fully explored our home town or city; now is the perfect time to be a local tourist and discover your home through fresh eyes. Schedule a few trips a week to make sure you keep it varied and exciting. An added benefit or happy consequence of these excursions is that you’re learning something new each day, from heritage sites to local history.

Rent the mobile convenience of a camper van or RV and take your ‘hotel room’ with you wherever you go. Check with the local laws and restrictions regarding what travel is allowed and, if permitted, hit the road. Taking your bed, bathroom and kitchen with you will save money for you to use to access national parks, and resorts. Keep in mind that RVs are going to be very popular so make sure to book your ‘parking’ spots in advance.

Camp Out

Get close to nature and your family in the wild outdoors. Pitch a tent, make a fire and camp under the stars for a full-on nature experience. Rising early for a day of hiking, fishing, paddling or kayaking, or lazing in the sun; followed by a meal cooked over the flames and great storytelling and conversation. What a wonderful way to digitally-detox!

Stay in

If, by choice or because of strict restrictions, you and your family are staying home, make sure to mark your vacation time by doing something different. Learn a new hobby, have game nights, get planting in the garden or start a new exercise routine, these are just a few ideas.

If you haven’t had enough of digital devices, there are great virtual vacations you and the family can take, from virtual museum tours to virtual nature experiences as well as fantastic creative arts online programmes available.

Wherever you and your family choose to go and whatever you choose to do, be safe, have fun and come back to school rested, rejuvenated and ready for an exciting new academic year!
